Jozef Cichý (1966-) is a the painter of the Romani origin, born in Nižný Žipov, the district of Trebišov. He was trained as an auto mechanic, later devoted himself exclusively to painting. His work was influenced especially by Salvador Dali, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo Buonarotti and Rafael Santi. He works mostly with acrylic and oil paintings, painting mostly on canvas and hardboard. He also has several wall paintings in churches and houses of sadness. The main themes of his works are, besides sacral themes, the topics of family, war and Roma. In the 90's, he was awarded a prize for painting in a national amateur art contest in Trenčín. He has exhibited his work with other Romany artists in Poland, the Museum of Romany Culture in Brno, in Bratislava at the exhibition named Heart Prints on the Romany Painters‘ Palette, in Prešov, in Michalovce at an exhibition entitled Romane čercheňa (The Romani Stars) or in Stropkov. His paintings are currently located in about 30 villages in houses for funerals, in several churches, in the Museum of Romany Culture in Brno and other places in Slovakia and abroad.
