"The SS soldiers began laughing and yelling: Banditen! Partisanen! They caught everyone who managed to run from the tight circle of soldiers. While one group drove the Roma into the huts, the other group doused them with gasoline and then set the settlement to fire. Oh, horror upon horror!
Feri shouted: Why shall we die like cattle? We are people! Aren’t you afraid of God? Taking so many lives! Flames erupted from the huts. Human roars and cries rang out from them. Men pounded on the doors, on the walls, pressed to the small windows and begged for mercy. All in vain.
As the smoke thickened with the smell of burnt flesh and bones, some of the guards’ stomachs churned. They vomited. The SS commander roared: This is how I will eliminate all inferior and degraded races! We, the Germans, have lit a cleansing fire and will rid the world of filth!"

„Before she left, Estera glared at the chairman with eyes full of hatred. She grabbed Julko’s hand and walked out the door. After she left, the chairman informed his staff about the Estera’s complaint and ordered them to ignore the accusation completely.
When Esther left the building, she stroked Julko's hair with a shaking hand. Disappointed and distressed, she told him: You see, Julko, we Gypsies never claim our truth!

And this is how it stayed since.
After liberation, the Roma never complained about their tyrants and murderers, because they knew very well that it would be in vain. To this day, no one has rehabilitated them for their suffering, injustice, wasted lives and destruction of property."

"The settlement was flooded with moonlight. The huts looked like ghosts in the moonlight. Everything was quiet, only now and then a man's snoring could be heard from behind the half-open door.
Suddenly, bayonets glinted in the darkness. Gendarmes were quietly sneaking into the settlement. They were armed and had clubs in hands. Commander Mihálik hissed: Now, will give the dirty trash a proper bath!"

“Don’t hesitate. Here’s the application form, take it and sign it. The law is also against Gypsies. But, when you become a member you save your black kids… The commissar saw his chance as he finished speaking and handed him the application.
Michal broke out in cold sweat. No, no more humiliation, nor deception! He approached the table and signed the application form to become a member of Hlinka’s Guard. Even with a stone face.”

The portrait of Elena Lacková (March 22, 1921, Veľký Šariš - January 1, 2003, Košice), one of the most important representatives of the Romani social and political emancipation movement during the second half of the 20th century in Slovakia. She was the founder of the modern Romani literature in Slovakia, she assisted with founding of the first post-war Romani organisation in Slovakia (The Association of Gypsies-Romanies, 1969 – 1973), she was one of the founders of the first Romani newspaper issued after 1989, Romano ľil. Elena Lacková became the leader and the symbol of the Romani movement in Slovakia.

"When they found out that Jenko was blind, they tore off his clothes and dragged him into the so-called bathroom. Men, women and children entered with him. There were so many of them that Jenko couldn't even move. Foreign bodies rubbed against him, he felt fear, the children began to cry.
Suddenly everything went quiet. The door slammed. Instead of water, there was a hiss from the showers above their heads. The SS let off the gas. In a moment, only the desperate moans of suffocating people, calls for help and banging on the door could be heard inside. Jenko was crying until the last moment: Sarika, my dear, where are you, call me! But his cries and sobs were choked by the gas in his throat.
When all was quiet in the chamber, the death squad ventilated the room and the cleaners came to drag the corpses to the crematorium."

Aktuálny stav rómskych štúdií na Slovensku II.

Druhý ročník konferencie Aktuálny stav rómskych štúdií na Slovensku sa realizoval 3. decembra 2021 v online priestore a v spolupráci s Centrom spoločenských a psychologických vied Slovenskej akadémie vied a Ústavom rómskych štúdií Prešovskej univerzity v Prešove. Cieľom konferencie bolo priniesť nové, aktuálne a aktualizované výstupy vedeckého bádania vedkýň a vedcov, ku ktorým dospeli v priebehu roka 2021.
V troch paneloch bolo prezentovaných dovedna 18 odborných príspevkov, z nich 11 je publikovaných v našom zborníku. Každá štúdia v zborníku má stanovených dvoch recenzentov, ktorých vnímame ako odborných garantov jednotlivých výstupov. Pevne veríme, že štúdie budú prínosné aj pre čitateľov, obohatia ich o nové poznatky, prípadne ich budú motivovať k ďalšiemu poznávaniu.
