Karel Holomek was born in 1937 in Brno, in the family of the original Moravian Roma who settled in Morava at the end of 17th century. His father Tomáš Holomek was the first Roma with the university degree in former Czechoslovakia.
Karel Holomek graduated from the Faculty of Machinery Engineering of the Military Academy in Brno, later he worked there as the senior assistant. His statements about the occupation of the country by the Soviet Army in 1968 got him fired from the Faculty. After that he worked as manual worker until 1990.
After 1990 he spent two years as the member of the Czech National Council (The Czech Parliament), a member of the Občianske hnutie party.
After 1989 he began his activities for integration of Roma into society. He is one of the founder of the Museum for Romani Culture in Brno and the founder of the Society of Roma in Morava, which publishes the bi-weekly Romano hangos (published since 1999). In 2002 he was awarded with the Medal for Merit, III. degree.
