Elena Cinová - The Interview

Elena Cinová was 49 years old at the time of the interview, she comes from Brekov. In the interview, she recalls his childhood, her parents, grandparents and siblings. She talks about her studies, her husband and her children. She also remembers the customs and traditions of the Christmas and Easter holidays kept in her family and the revolutionary year of 1989, when her father co-founded a political party. She talks about experiences with discrimination, about Romani culture and about the way of life of Roma nowadays.

Martin Kaleja-Januv

Martin Kaleja-Januv (1984-) was born in a Romani settlement in Jarovnice where he lives. His relation to fine arts was built during his years in elementary school, under the guidance of Art Education teacher, Jan Sajko. He continued his studies at the Secondary School of Arts in Prešov, in the field of art carving. Besides painting and drawing he keeps woodcarving, in which the religious motives dominate. Martin Kaleja-Januv works at the local elementary school in Jarovnice as a teacher's assistant.

Július Lakatoš - an naive painter, came from the village of Selice. He started to draw the first pictures with pencil, later with tempera. Years later he started painting on canvas. Landscapes are the dominant motif of his works. He painted exclusively in the winter season and at night, when the ideas that emerged while fishing on the river Váh matured in him. He did not depict the Romani theme unless requested by the Roma museum. His dream was to paint an old Romani pero (a Romani street, ghetto) where he grew up.

Jaroslav Cicko

Jaroslav Cicko is a well-known Romani artist and sculptor who created his works mainly from wood, but also stone.
He was born on March 25, 1939 in Martin and died on November 18, 2010 in Horná Štubňa in the district of Turčianske Teplice.
He worked as a toolmaker at the Heavy Engineering Plant in Martin and as a carver at the Martin Studio of Non-Professional Artists. He was a lecturer at symposia of non-professional artists.
In 2000, he exhibited his works and demonstrated various methods of creating his works in Germany, the Czech Republic, Spain, France and Italy.
The most common motif of his works is a woman in all her forms.

The photo shows a professional Romani artist Alexander Bohó. He was born in Brezno and comes from five siblings. He studied with doc. J. Jánoška and professor F. Ondra free graphics and graphic design. He studied painting with the academic painter F. Kráľ in the years 1979-1985. In 1996 he graduated from the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University in Bratislava, Department of History of Art.

Artworks and wooden sculptures were exhibited in several cities in Slovakia in that year and in the following years.PhDr. Vojtech Kökény (Kökény Kotyer Béla) was born in 1956 in a Romani settlement in the village of Cakov near Rimavská Seč. He came from a musical family. For many years he worked as a worker on various construction sites in Slovakia and abroad. He devoted himself to fine arts, politics and local activism. As he himself mentions in one of the interviews, he was not a prolific painter. He worked with pencils, water and oil paints. He exhibited his works mainly in the Romani Traveling Gallery, organized by the Civic Association Jekhetane-Spolu under the leadership of Daniela Hivešová-Šilanová. From 1995 to 2005 he worked at the District Office in Rimavská Sobota as a social worker.
He was a member of the Roma Civic Initiative (ROI) party, later joined the Roma Intelligence for Coexistence (RIS) party, and ended his political career in the Roma Coalition Party (SRK). In 2005, he ran for Headperson of the Banská Bystrica Self-Governing Region.

Arne Mann and Elena Lacková

PhDr. Arne B. Mann, CSc. is a leading Slovak ethnologist-Romanist, lives in Bratislava. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy of the Charles University in Bratislava, majoring in ethnography (1978), PhDr. obtained in 1980 and CSc. in 1997.
He worked as a researcher at the Department of Ethnology of the Faculty of Arts of the Charles University in Bratislava and from 1983 at the Institute of Ethnology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.
His scientific research is focused on the history of the Roma, including the Romani Holocaust, religious ideas of the Roma, social and spiritual culture, crafts and employment, and others.
He works as an external pedagogue at the Faculty of Arts of the Komenský University in Bratislava (1995 – present), the Faculty of Arts of the Constantin the Philosopher University in Nitra (2001 – 2009) and the Faculty of Humanities (formerly the Institute of Basic Education) of the Charles University in Prague (1998 – 2016).
Elena Lacková was born on March 22, 1921 in Veľký Šariš. She is one of the most important Romani writers. Her works were intended for both the children and adult readers. She graduated from the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University in Prague (1970). She wrote both prosaic and dramatic works. She was a lifelong activist and Romani activist. She died on January 1, 2003 in Košice.

Dezider Banga

Archival photo shows the Romani writer, screenwriter and producer Dezider Banga. The analogue photograph was taken on August 22, 1998 during the Roma festival. The venue of the festival was not mentioned with the analogue film, nor was the author of the photo. The photo was published in the Romani newspaper Romano nevo ľil no. 416-423/2000 on p. 8 under the article titled New Collection of Romani Poet.
Dezider Banga was born on August 24, 1939 in Hradiště. He attended both primary and secondary schools in Uhorske, near Poltár. He received his teaching education at the Pedagogical School in Krupina. He studied Slovak language and History as his majors at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Comenius University in Bratislava. He worked as a high school professor at the gymnasium in Trebišov and for the next ten years worked as a playwright of the Literary Editorial Office of Slovak Television in Košice. In 1979 he went to Bratislava and became an editor, and from 1986 he was the editor-in-chief of the social monthly Nová cesta, where he worked until the periodical's stopped publishing in 1990. He was the chairman of the civic association Romaňi kultura and the editor-in-chief of the cultural and social monthly Roma as well as of the children's magazine Luluďi, both published by the above mentioned association. He is also the active businessman – the owner of a printing house.
In 2009, he received a high state award - the Order of Ľudovít Štúr III. Class for extraordinary merits for development in the field of culture, especially Romani literature.
