Štefan Tupý, Podskalka, Humenné

The interview is a part of the research project focused on collecting the memoirs of people dwelling in Podskalka, a Romani quarter of the town Humenné. The researcher is Peter Kudráč, the local activist. The respondents participating in the project answer questions about their origin, dwelling place, education, profession, memories of the events and changes after 1968 and 1989, as well as about the form and content of the Romani culture. The interview is in Romani language. Person interviewed was Štefan Tupý, the interview was lead by Peter Kudráč.

Martin Kukučín - Red Heifer

Martin Kukučín, originally Matej Bencúr (1860 Jasenová, Slovakia, at the time Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy – 1928 Pakrac, Croatia, at the time The Kingdom of Serbians, Croats and Slovenians) is a leading representative of prosaic writing within the Slovak realism in literature. His works are valued as innovative according to its contribution to the Slovak language. In his works Kukučín used spoken language and, together with depiction of both every-day and holiday life in village, the details of life as leading motive, he transfered the spoken Slovak to the language of literature.

The short story Red Heifer was written in 1885. Already in this critically light novel, pointing to traditional bad habit – alcoholism, the author’s talent for story-telling and sense of humor got strongly manifested. Through the story of typical village person – shoemaker Adam Krt, who falls deep into alcohol addiction what influences both his judgment and human relationships, the author created a series of tragic-comic events.
The original writing was adopted into screenplay by Roman Goroľ, in Romani language. The language correction, direction, music, post-production and production was provided by the Department of documentation and information center for Romani culture in the State Scientific Library in Prešov in 2018.

William Shakespeare - Romeo and Juliet

William Shakespeare is the author of the tragedy Romeo and Juliet, published in 1597. The tragic story of young lovers from two antagonistic families has been since the subject of many original works in theater and film, as well as audio production - radio plays or audio books.
Originally a play in five acts, with a chorus, this audio dramatization is adapted into a sequence of dialogues and monologues of the main characters. The chorus is represented by a narrator opening the drama with the exposition and closing it with the narrated epilogue.
The script was written by Bc. Roman Goroľ in Romani language. Dominika Badžová, Jaroslav Mačo and Petra Husárová perform in the play. The original music was composed and recorded by Mgr. art. Barbora Botošová.

Zlatica Rusová - The Queen of Water

Inspired by the works of the Romani writer Zlatice Rusová, the audio drama Queen of Water was created. This audio dramatization has the characteristic elements of a fairy tale, in which good and bad characters and supernatural beings can be found, and good wins over evil. The fairy tale is intended for both the junior and senior pupils. It is recorded in two languages, Slovak and Romani. The aim of the editorial activities of ŠVK PO_DICRK in 2017 was to bring literature into the target group, transferring it from its written form to the verbal form. This goal was fulfilled by creating a series of audio dramatizations. Written by Bc. Roman Goroľ, pedagogical worker and writer. The cast consists of Romani secondary schools and university students.

Oscar Wilde - The Picture of Dorian Gray

The novel Portrait of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde was a controversial work at the time of its creation (1890), which later becamethe subject of films or theater plays. The easier access of young people and adults to world literature motivated the creators ofaudio dramatization to process it in the Roma language. The dominant role in this drama plays a magical picture, a portrait ofthe main character of the story, Dorian Gray. The beautiful face in the picture gradually takes over the evil character traits ofDorian Gray, becoming the demon as Dorian Gray is in real life. This audio dramatization falls under horror genres, it isproduced in the Romani language. The aim of the editorial activities of ŠVK PO_DICRK in 2017 was to bring literature into thetarget group, transferring it from its written form to the verbal form. Ondrej Ferko is behind the composition of the Roma song Roma Devlestar. The Roma Devlestar song is a slow rom-pop song. Žaneta Štipáková sang this piece with a guitar accompaniment by Jozef Ferko at a meeting on the occasion of the World Roma Holocaust Day, as part of the Living Book project organized by the State Scientific Library in Prešov on August 24, 2016 in the Regional Museum in Hanušovce nad Topľou.

Zaneta Stipakova, singer and actress of the Romathan Theater, is behind the composition of the Romani ballad Kali Chercen/Dark Star. It is one of the slow-rhythm songs of the rom-pop genre. The song is part of a CD called Kaj te žav - Where Should I Go. The CD was released by the band Kali Chercen, in which the author was a guest singer at the time of its production (December 2007). Zaneta Stipakova sang this piece with a guitar accompaniment by Jozef Ferko at a meeting on the occasion of the World Roma Holocaust Day, within the project Living Book, organized by the State Scientific Library in Presov in August 24, 2016 in the  Museum of the Homeland History in Hanušovce nad Topľou.

In 1971, in Orpington, near London, the United Kingdom, at the First World Congress of the Roma, this song was recognized as the official anthem of the Roma nation. It was based on the motives of an old Balkan love song, the text is about the wandering of the Roma and suffering during the Second World War.
The text was written and the musical arrangement was made by the composer Žarko Jovanovič, a native of Yugoslavia, in 1949.

Aušvicate o kher baro / Big House in Aschwitz:
The lament related to the Holocaust (Porrajmos) which Roma were a part of. The authors of lyrics and music are not identified, the song is traditionally passed to next generation orally.
The lament Aušvits (Auschwitz) was first recorded in the 1960s by Ružena Danielová, a survivor from the Czech town of Mutenice, Juhomoravsky Region in Czech Republic, the Holocaust (Porrajmos) survivor.
