The photo shows prof. PhDr. Ctibor Nečas, DrSc. (26.7.1933 Rakvice, district Břeclav - 19.12.2017). He worked as a university teacher at Masaryk University in Brno, where in 1992 he obtained the title of professor of general history. He is the founder of Romani studies in the former Czechoslovakia. His main area of interest was the persecution of Czech Roma during the Nazi occupation and the Roma Holocaust.
The author of the photo is a Romani photographer Jozef Ferenc. Digital photography was taken in 2006 in Bratislava during an event called The Unrecognized Holocaust.

Karel Holomek

Karel Holomek was born in 1937 in Brno, in the family of the original Moravian Roma who settled in Morava at the end of 17th century. His father Tomáš Holomek was the first Roma with the university degree in former Czechoslovakia.
Karel Holomek graduated from the Faculty of Machinery Engineering of the Military Academy in Brno, later he worked there as the senior assistant. His statements about the occupation of the country by the Soviet Army in 1968 got him fired from the Faculty. After that he worked as manual worker until 1990.
After 1990 he spent two years as the member of the Czech National Council (The Czech Parliament), a member of the Občianske hnutie party.
After 1989 he began his activities for integration of Roma into society. He is one of the founder of the Museum for Romani Culture in Brno and the founder of the Society of Roma in Morava, which publishes the bi-weekly Romano hangos (published since 1999). In 2002 he was awarded with the Medal for Merit, III. degree.
The author of the photo is the Romani photographer Jozef Ferenc. The digital photo was made in 2006 in Bratislava during the event named The Unrecognized Holocaust.

Ján Berky Mrenica

Ján Berky Mrenica junior, one of the members and since 1997 also the head of the Devil´s violin Orchestra, belongs among the prominent violin virtuosos in Slovakia. He studied the violin play on Conservatory Bratislava, but he is also engaged in writing the books about the most famous Romani songs. He utilized his musical talent for composing the musical arrangements for a CD of Devil´s Violin, but also for the other various folk ensembles. He supports musically talented children from socially disadvantaged environment, his effort grew into a well-known project called Divé Maky (Wild Poppies). The photographs were taken during the pre-Christmas concert in Kežmarok, within the project Music Without the Borders, in cooperation with Poland and the Secondary Proffesional School of Kežmarok.

Ivan Šarközy – The Blacksmith Shop

Marián Balog

Marian Balog is a founder of the civil organisation Romani Literary Club made in 2009 of which he is also an active member. The Club presents literary works of Roma about Roma.

Ivan Veselý

Ivan Veselý was born in Eastern Slovakia, in the Romani settlement in Smižany. He is the oldest of five siblings. He graduated from the Middle Army School in Martin, until 1989 worked as a professional soldier in Czech Republic. In 1989, because of his critical views of the military leadership he was degraded from rank and discharged from the army. He later worked as a worker. After the change of the regime he was militarilly rehabilitated. He is a founder of the NGO Dženo, years-long member and functionary of the International Romani Union (IRU), as well as a member of various international committees for Romani emancipation. He was also a vicechair of the Romani Civil Initiative. The photograph was made during interview in 2013.

The Július Bandy Folk Band

The photos were taken during the Living Book event, the theme was the Roma Holocaust. The musical guest was the Folk Music of Julius Bandy.The band members are the father, Julius Bandy and his three sons – Kristian, Julius and Samuel. They play cimbalom, double bass, violin and viola. They play both classical and dance music genres. Their repertoire include both Slovak and Romani folk music as well as music of other national minorities – Jewish, Ruthenian, Hungarian, Russian. They also play music from film.
The father, Julius Bandy, comes from musician family. He was born in Velky Saris. He graduated from the Elementary School for Music of Mikulas Moyzes as a cimbalom player. He also plays saxophone, double bass and harmonica. In the years 1982-1983 he played in the children folk ensemble Dubravienka in Presov. In the years 1985-1986 he was a part of the children folk ensemble Sarisancek in Presov. As 15 years old he started playing in the Theater of Alexander Duchnovic in Presov. His military service brought him to the Army Ensemble of Art Janosik in Zvolen (1993-1994). He played cimbalom in several other bands and ensembles – the Folk Band Presovcan, the Folk Ensemble Sabinovcan, the Folk Band Czardasz from Presov, the Folk Band of Jan Budyi from Humenne.
Kristian Bandy studied studied violin at the Elementary School of Art of Mikulas Moyzes in Presov. He continued his studies at Private Conservatory of Dezider Kardos in Presov (1-3 years), later moved to the Private Conservatory of Music and Drama in Kosice (4-6 years). He will study violin further on the Catholic University in Ruzomberok, the local branch in Spisske Podhradie. He is a guest player in the orchestra of the Romathan Theater, he leads the music part of the ensemble Fialecka at the Elementary School Srobarova in Presov. In the family band he plays viola.
Julius Bandy studied cimbalom at the Elementary School of Art of Mikulas Moyzes in Presov. He continued his studies at the Private Conservatory of Music and Drama in Kosice (1-4 years), which he graduated from at the end of the school year 2018-2019. In the family band he plays the double bass.
Samuel Bandy is the lead violinist of the family band. He studies violin at the Elementary School of Art of Mikulas Moyzes in Presov. For his excellent musical performance as a violin player he received several awards from competitions in Slovakia.
The family band was founded in 2013.
The sons Kristian and Julius graduated from the Private School of Music and Drama Arts in Kosice. The youngest one, Samuel, attends one of the elementary schools in Presov.

Elena Cinová graduated from the University of Constantine the Philosopher in Nitra, department of the Romani Culture, a primary school teaching. She works as a teacher of professional development at the Methodological and Pedagogical Centre in Prešov, department ROCEPO (The Romani Centre Prešov). In Humenné, where she lives, she is a leader of the local NGO The Union for Romani Physical Exercises and Sport. Within the NGO work she conducts several projects focused mainly on work with Romani children and youth in the localities Podskalka and Brekov. The photograph was made during documentation of her interview in the premises of The State Research Library in Prešov, in 2020.

Lukáš Jarka

Lukáš Jarka comes from the village of Čičava. Into the carving workshop he came thanks to his father, who worked there as a master, since he was trained as a carpenter. At work, he cares more about details. He is mainly engaged in the production of works with a religious theme.
The photographs were taken in 2013 during the documentation of the ROMA ART Čičava craft workshop. The sheltered workshop was established in 2012, initiated by Martin Mekel.

Juraj Goroľ

Juraj Goroľ comes from the village of Hlinné. He graduated from a two-year agricultural school. When he saw the work of the carver Milan Krajňák, he liked it and wanted to try it too. Most of his works are Christian themed, depicting mainly the face of Jesus, or the cross.
The photographs were taken in 2013 during the documentation of the ROMA ART Čičava craft workshop. The sheltered workshop was established in 2012, initiated by Martin Mekel.
