The Devilish Violin and Guests

A special concert of The Devilish Violin Orchestra and the guests dedicated to the late 75th birthday of Ján Berky Mrenica Sn. (11.5.1939, Očová, † 12.10.2008) took place in Bratislava on 18.11.2014. Ján Berky Mrenica Sn. was a violinist and composer. He founded The Devilish Violin Orchestra, whose chief representative after his death became his son, Ján Berky Mrenica Jr. Ján Berky Mrenica Sn. was widely respected as a representative of the Slovak folk music and a leading member of the SĽUK (Slovak People's Artistic Group) musical ensemble; he participated in the creation of many television music programs. He was also a collector of Roma songs, which he published in 1993 in the book named Nane oda lavutaris. He has worked with many Slovak singers (Martin Babjak, Jana Kocianová and others) and musicians, as part of his musical work. He has received awards for his outstanding cultural achievements in Slovakia: 1995 - The Slovakia's Messenge, 1997 - The Pribina's Cross, 1997- Slovak Gold, 2003 - The Crystal Wing for the year  2002, 2003 - The Award of the City of Zvolen for his life work, 2004 - The Prize of the Decade Slovak Gold, 2006 - The Award of Banska Bystrica Self-Governing Region, the golden CD for the album The Primash Dream, 5 000 pieces sold. In honor of this musician, a concert led by Ján Berky Jr. and The Devilish Violin Orchestra was held, with guests like Jana Hubinska, Jana Orlicka, Marián Čekovský, Martin Valihora, Milan Godla, Ondrej Ferko and others. The recording provides a view of the musical performances of the guests.

The Bethlehem

The artifact was made in 2006, during the project titled Feder dzivipe - Lepsi zivot (Better Life), implemented by the Civic Association for Support and Regional Development and the Office of the Plenipotentiary of the Slovak Government for Romani Communities, supported by the European Social Fund. In cooperation with the Office for Labour, Social Affairs and Family there were 33 unemployed Roma selected who received training; the Association then started searching for permanent jobs for them, in various professions. Some of the worked in crafts and arts workshop lead by the lecturere, the fine arts pedagogue Mgr. Miriam Kavulicova-Tomasiakova, where, besides many other aesthetic and practically used objects the above-mentioned artifact was made. The artifact's author is unknown.

Michal Bársony - A Girl in the Window

Born in the village Kunova Teplica, the district of Roznava. The family spoke Hungarian, and kept the tradition of smithery and music. He graduated from the Pedagogical Faculty of Matej Bel University in Banska Bystrica, specialzed in fine arts and Russian language. The post-gradual studies completed at the Pedagogical Faculty of University of Constantine the Philosopher in Nitra, awarded with the title PeadDr. His main creation is painting and drawing, with prevailing themes of the sacral nature, as well as some women portraits and landscapes. As a pedagogue worked at several elementary and secondary schools, as well as at universities. He also worked for the State Institute Of Pedagogy.  In the video he describes the creative process of painting the picture named A Girl in the Window, the technique used, the material, and the idea behind the selection and presentation of the theme.
