The organizer of the 4th annual conference The Current State of Roma Studies IV was the State Scientific Library in Prešov, the Documentation and Information Centre of Roma Culture. The co-organisers were the Centre of Social and Psychological Sciences of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Roma Studies of the University of Prešov. The conference was held on 7 and 8 December, 2023 in five panels, with a total of 23 papers. The hybrid format allowed the participation of scientists from abroad. In the article, the author deals with the analysis of the Romani language from a linguistic point of view in comparison with its application level in the educational process.

Leonard Farkas

Leonard Farkas comes from Slovakia, from Dunajská Streda, from a Hungarian-speaking family. He has been involved in magic and spells since childhood. He studied at a magic school in Budapest, participated in several international competitions and collaborated with various artists, e.g. violinist Zoltán Mága or the dance group R3D ONE. The Hungarian folk song Azt a kutya mindenit (Throw It to a Dog), performed by the singer Gitana (stage name), her civil name is Adriana Drafiová, musical accompaniment by Ďusi Band, the folk cimbalom orchestra. The swing song’s is interpreted in the way typical for sub-genre gypsy swing. The video was recorded on November 19, 2021 in Prešov, The Center for Independent Culture Wave. Gitana (A. Drafiová) - vocals, Július Bandy - dulcimer, Samuel Bandy - violin, Roland Horváth - clarinet, saxophone, Kristián Bandy - viola, Július Bandy junior - double bass.

Musical talent is her family heirloom. Gitana (Adriana Drafiová) used her gift and became an accomplished singer of mainly electro swing and gypsy swing. Already at the age of seventeen, she sang with various bands abroad, performed in Hungary with Jozef Szabo, a respected singer, and later on her years long collaboration with the Kmeťoband began. She also sang a duet with Juraj Benetin, the lead singer of Korben Dallas, which is the opening song of Pixar's animated short film Lava from 2015.
Ďusi Band
Romani family folk band from Prešov, led by the cimbalist Július Bandy. He and his three sons produce and preserve the best traditions of Romani dulcimer music in Slovakia. They perform independently or in collaboration with a wide range of Roma and non-Roma artists. The guest member is Roland Horváth (clarinet, saxophone) from Rimavská Sobota.

The monodrama produced by The Independent Theater Hungary. Screenplay: Marton Illés, Director: Tomás Szegedi, Acting: Emília Lovas. The story of a Romani girl growing up in a world consisting of her family, school, the wider society. A girl with special abilities can read the thoughts and memories of people around her. She does not want to follow the example of others, rather decides to live life in her way.
The story of the superhero is based on the true stories of Roma youth and the environment from which these youth come. These stories were recorded at workshops of the Independent Theater of Hungary organized under the name "Roma Heroes". The record was created: 28.02.2020, Wave club - center of independent culture, Prešov.

Woodcarvers from Bretka

A short video portrait about two amateur carvers - a father and a son who live and work in the village of Bretka (Rožňava district). Vojtech Váradi worked there as shepherd, carving became his hobby, when spending a lot of time with cattle out on pasture, he began carving from pieces of wood. He has three sons, but only one of them is involved in carving - Boris Váradi. In the video, they present their products and their carving technology. They carve mainly birds, but also utility objects such as spoons, ladles, boars. Carving is a source of livelihood for them.

Balvalfest (The Wind Festival)

The video recording of the 13th Romani festival, recorded in 2013 in Kokava upon Rimavica. The festival presents traditional Romani music as well as modern musical genres. Every year the organisers of the festival invite the performers both from Slovakia and other countries. The video is the cut of the live performances presenting traditional and popular Romani music, the interview with the festival organisor Vladimir Sendrei is added to the final edition.
