The Ďusi Band

Július Bandy's folk band - Ďusi Band is based in Prešov. The members of the band are from a family where skills of musicians are passed down from generation to generation. Ing the band there is the father Július Bandy and his three sons - Kristián, Július, Samuel. They play dulcimer, double bass, violin and viola. Their repertoire includes Slovak and Roma folklore music as well as music of other national minorities - Jewish, Ruthenian, Hungarian, Russian. The band also performs film music. The family band was formed in 2013.
The set of photographs portrays the original band together with new members: the singer Anita Balážová Haffnerová, the clarinet player Roland Horváth and the pianist and vocalist Jakub Haffner.
The photos were made during documentation of the Romani family cimbalom bands, in Prešov on July 14, 2023.

Anita Haffnerová Balážová

Anita Haffnerová Balážová studied classical singing at the Conservatory in Košice. Currently she works as a teacher of singing at the Private Art School in Liptovská Štiavnica.

Roland Horváth

B.Sc. Roland Horváth, DiS.art was born in a musical family in Rimavská Sobota. He received his first level university degree at the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica. He plays wind instruments, he started his active career in Hungary, where he played in several bands under the leadership of several well-known lead violinists. After returning to Slovakia, he worked in the Romathan theater in Košice. In 2011, together with the band Sendreiovci, he participated in the recording of the soundtrack to the blockbuster Sherlock Holmes - A Game of Shadows (director: Guy Ritchie, music: Hans Zimmer). In Slovakia, he is a member of several bands, in which he plays the clarinet, and collaborates intensively with Július Bandy's family cimbalom band Ďusi Band. Since 2019, he has been the director of the Basic Art School in the village of Jesenské.

The Pokoshes

The Pokoshes is the Romani cimbalom band whose members come from the villages of Telgart and Sumiac, from the Slovak region of Horehronie. Their repertoir consists of the master interpretation of the authentic local Romani songs. In January, 2020, their album, title The Folk Band Pokosovci reached the 15th place in the World Music Chart Europe.

Dušan Deme

Dušan Deme was born into a musical family in Lučenec. His grandfather brought him to music, since early childhood. He played the piano from the age of 6, later he also studied at an Elementary Art School. He also studied singing. Since the age of 14, he has been making a living from music by performing at various events, later he worked on various ocean liners as a pianist and singer. He is particularly inclined towards Romani music, folk songs, jazz and older Slovak dance music. In the interview, in addition to memories of his family, he also talks about what he thinks about contemporary Romani music, the future of traditional cimbalom bands in Slovakia, his work in the Roland Horváth Orchestra, but also about the Romani language and culture.

Kristián Bandy

Bc. Kristian Bandy, Dis.art plays viola in the family cimbalom band Dusi Band. He is a visiting member of the music section of the Romathan Theater, he conducts the music band of the Folklore Ensemble Fijalecka at the Elementary School Srobarova in Presov. He is a graduate of the Mikulas Moyzes Elementary Art School in Presov, violin major. He continued his studies at the Dezider Kardoš Private Conservatory in Prešov (1st - 3rd year), and graduated from the Private Music and Dramatic Conservatory in Košice (4th - 6th year).
He received his bachelor's degree at the Catholic University in Ružomberok, workplace in Spišské Podhradie.

Samuel Bandy

Samuel Bandy is the leading violinist of the family cimbalom band Ďusi Band. Graduated from the Mikulas Moyzes' Elementary School of Arts in Presov, he is currently a student of the Conservatory, Timonova street 2, Kosice. He won several significant awards from various competitions of violin players in Slovakia.

The Manusha

The Manusha (People) is the music band in which the professional musicians play, the project being initiated by a Slovak singer Júlia Kozáková. Ľubomír Gašpar plays a cimbalom, Viliam Didiáš plays a violin, Vojtech Bélu Botoš plays a viola and Ján Rigo plays a double-bass. With financial support of the Fund for minority culture SR and The Bratislava Self-Governing Region the band released the album with the same title. Ten compositions are the traditional Romani songs arranged specifically by the band's members, introducing also elements of the Hungarian Romani music.

Daniel Pokoš

He was born into the musical family in Telgart, since his early childhood he was interested in playing various instruments. He plays primarily the violin. He learnt to play the violin by himself, never attending any musical school. He gained musical experience by playing in his own band as well as in the Pokosovci Band.
