Living Book - World Romani Language Day

A public event from the Living Books series on the topic of Romani language and literature, which took place in the Viola Theater. The living books were the writers Roman Goroľ and Monika Duždová. The former soloist of the Romathan Theater, Lucia Krajňáková, was also a living book. The musical guests were Martin Mišalko and Michaela Oračková.

Jana Sendreiová

In 2005, Janka Sendreiová performed with the Anyalai Gipsy Band and other soloists at Carnegie Hall in Manhattan, New York. The performance was a great success. Film music composer Hans Zimmer chose two Romani musical groups from Slovakia for part of the music for the film Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows directed by Guy Ritchie: The Sendreiovci from Kokava nad Rimavicou and the Cigánski baróni from Gelnica. Together with her husband Vlado Sendrei, they form the band Sendreiovci.

Milan Deme, Milan Oláh

Milan Deme comes from Klenovec, he plays double-bass. He was born into the family of musicians. He never studied music formally, he is a self-taught musician. He is a member of the Sendreiovci Band. As a musician he participated on composing and playing in the soundtrack of the film Sherlock Holmes. 
Milan Olah comes from the family of musicians from Klenovec. He plays the contra viola. He is a member of the Sendreiovci Band, as well as of other family bands in Klenovec. 
In their double interview the musicians speak about the family music tradition in Klenovec.

The event was implemented in cooperation with RTVS and took place in the Grand Studio of the Slovak Radio at Moyzesova Street 7 in Košice. The event is a part of the series of cultural gatherings named the Living Books. The living books were member of the Sendreiovci Gypsy Band.

The Bandy Brothers

Kristián Bandy studies the violin at the Catholic University in Ružomberok.He is a guest in the musical component of the Romathan theatre and leads the musical component of the Fijalečka ensemble at the Šrobárová Primary School in Prešov. He plays the viola in the family band.   
Július Bandy graduated from the Private Music and Drama Conservatory in Košice. He plays the double bass in the family band. He is also a talented multi-instrumentalist.
Samuel Bandy is the leader of the family band. He studies violin at the Mikuláš Moyzes Primary Art School in Prešov. For his violin playing he has won several important awards at competitions in Slovakia.
The topic of the interview is their journey as musicians, education and identification with Roma culture.

Many of them have never even met. They have only one thing in common: they are or were residents of the most famous Slovak housing estate, Luník IX. The publication was presented by author Klara Kohoutová and illustrator editor Petra Kurutzová in a discussion with Erika Godlová on September 8, 2023 in the premises of the Libresso Cafe in Prešov.
