Milan Berky (1961-) comes from Lučenec, he spent the most part of his life working on the railways as a train driver. His more intense art work began when, after almost 35 years he lost his work. The change in his life meant he got time to develop his childhood passion - drawing. His work focuses primarily on portraits, characteristic feature of them is extraordinary deatail and realism. He mainly uses charcoal, what allows him to achieve the great depth and contrast of his black-and-white works that have an almost photographic effect. His works include portraits of famous personalities, but also portraits of ordinary people, Roma men and women from cultural, social and sporting life.Milan Berky has gained recognition not only in Slovakia but also abroad, despite the fact that he has no formal artistic education. He has received several awards, including first place in the portrait category at the International Fine Arts Fair in České Budějovice (2017) and the Inspiration award for contribution to culture (2022). His drawing – a portrait of an Iraqi statesman – was used on Iraqi postage stamps in 2023.
