Mgr. art Denisa Havrlova (1971-) is the Romani activist and journalist, born in the village Ocova. She graduated from the Fine Arts College in Bratislava, specialization as a director of documentary film, as well as from the Academy of Arts in Banska Bystrica, where she studied the documentary film making. She was active in the field of journalism, since 1998 she started to work for the Romani newspaper Romano nevo lil, in Presov. Later on, in 2008, she became its editor-in-chief. For the Slovak Press Agency (TASR) she worked as the visual editor, she also tried the work for the Office of Plenipotentiary of the Slovak Government for the Romani Communities. In her speaking she mentions her first steps in journalism and the following professional growth. She speaks about the Romani topic in the media, the picture of Roma in the media and the Romani media. She speaks about the people who helped her in professional and personal development, and she expresses her gratitude.

Miroslav Pokoš

He comes from the village of Šumiac, from the family of musicians. His father's family are the Pokoš musicians from Šumiac, his mother's family the Harvans from Telgárt. These are the localities in which guitar or keyboard instruments never dominated. Instead, violin, accordion, double-bass and cimbalom were key instruments played there. He plays the double-bass, violin and accordion. He is a musical self-taught person. The Pokošovci Band plays both Slovak and Romani folklore music from the region of Horehronie.
His brothers Rado and Stano and him released the album Folk Band Pokošovci 2, which reached the 15th place in the World Music Chart Europe, in January 2020.

Daniel Pokoš

Daniel Pokoš comes from a family with a strong musical tradition. He was taught to play the violin by his father and grandfather, he also learned by listening to violinists from Horehronie. He works in the Pokošovci family cimbalom band. In the interview, he talks about his family and personal history and his perception of music, both traditional and contemporary.
The video recording of the interview was made on August 26, 2022 in Prešov, as part of the cycle of documentation of Roma cimbalom bands in Slovakia.

The members of the band Manusha (People) are professional musicians. The music project had been initiated by the Slovak singer Julia Kozakova; the musicians are Lubomir Gaspar on cimbalom, Viliam Didias on violin, Vojtech “Belu” Botos on viola and Jan Rigo on double-bass. In 2022, with the support of the Fund for Development of the National Minorities’ Culture in SR, and The Bratislava Self-Governing Region, the band released the album with the same name. The album presents 10 songs – all of them are the traditional Romani songs, played in arrangements by Manusha.
In 2022, the Documentation and Information Centre of the Romani Culture began to document the Romani cimbalom bands, especially those which carry on the family musical tradition.

Dušan Deme

Dušan Deme was born into a musical family in Lučenec. His grandfather brought him to music, since early childhood. He played the piano from the age of 6, later he also studied at an Elementary Art School. He also studied singing. Since the age of 14, he has been making a living from music by performing at various events, later he worked on various ocean liners as a pianist and singer. He is particularly inclined towards Romani music, folk songs, jazz and older Slovak dance music. In the interview, in addition to memories of his family, he also talks about what he thinks about contemporary Romani music, the future of traditional cimbalom bands in Slovakia, his work in the Roland Horváth Orchestra, but also about the Romani language and culture.

Gejza Adam

PaedDr. Gejza Adam, PhD. (born 1951 in Michalovce) is an important figure in the Roma emancipation movement in the former Czechoslovakia and subsequently, in the Slovak Republic. As a qualified teacher for the 1st grade of elementary schools (Faculty of Pedagogy, P.J. Šafárik University – a graduate), he participated in activities in the field of education of Romani children already around the mid-1980s. In the years 1989-1992, he was a member of the Public Against Violence (Verejnosť proti násiliu - VPN) movement, where he represented the Roma Citizens' Initiative platform (Rómska občianska iniciatíva – ROI). In the years 1990 – 1992, he was a member of the Federal Assembly of the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic (FZ ČSFR). In 1998, he became a member of the Government Council for National Minorities and Ethnic Groups in the Slovak Republic, in 2000-2004 he was Commissioner for Roma Education within the International Romani Union (IRU). He continued his political work as the chairman of the Roma Coalition Party (Strana rómskej koalície – SRK) until 2020.
What can be considered as the greatest achievements of his career is the cooperation in the process of granting the status of a national minority to the Roma, the establishment of a network of private secondary schools (Private Secondary Pedagogical and Social Academy, Private Secondary Art School) where Romani language is taught as well as taught in, the establishment of the Detached Workplace of the University of Health Services and Social Work of St. Elisabeth in Košice of which he acted as the headperson.

Leonard Farkas

Štefan Vansač

Štefan Vansač comes from Spišská Nová Ves. He studied cimbalom at the Conservatory in Košice. Currently he teaches music at the Elementary School of Arts in Spišská Nová Ves as well as at the Elementary School of Arts in Smižany. He is a member of the Štefan Cína’s Folklore Band since 2015, the band recorded a CD called Ja chlapec chudobni/I am a Poor Guy. The band composed and recorded part of soundtrack of the Slovak film Loli paradička/Red Tomato. The band also recorded the CDs of the Folklore Ensemble Orgonina, and the Folklore Group Jamničan. Together with the band, they took part in several large TV programs, in 2017 it was the TV show Zem spieva/The Earth Sings, in 2018 Československo má talent/Czechoslovakia has Talent.

Ján Jóny

Ján Jóny lives and works in Michalovce. From an early age he was taught to play the violin, but he acquired his musical education in playing wind instruments, first at the Military Conservatory in Roudnice nad Labem in the Czech Republic, where he studied playing the tuba, later at the Conservatory in Košice. For several years he worked as a member of the Military Music of the Slovak Armed Forces. Later he returned to playing the violin and started playing with several folk ensembles. Since 2014, he has been working at the Jurošík Private Elementary Art School in Michalovce as a music teacher and is currently also a member of Štefan Cína's folk music.
